June 1st is National Barefoot Day. Everyone should kick off their shoes and enjoy the benefits of being barefoot. This year might be a little different because of social distancing but everyone can still find a way to celebrate this day. Walk in your yard and feel the grass between your toes. Pamper your feet with a relaxing foot bath. Make some footprint art. Play this little piggy.
National Barefoot Day was created by an organization called Souls4Souls after the horrible Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004. The goal is to inspire people to donate used and new footwear to the victims of natural disasters. Please go through your closet and donate any shoes you no longer wear.
Once you have done that, take the day to enjoy being barefoot and the many benefits it offers.
Here are 5 Benefits to Being Barefoot
1. Better Posture
Being barefoot tends to put our bodies into a more natural alignment which can allow for better posture and less strain on the joints. It can also encourage a more efficient gait.
2. Strengthen Feet
For many, wearing over-protective shoes has led to weakening of foot muscles. Going barefoot can help to develop the muscles, tendons and ligaments that may have become weak from restricted foot movement.
3. Reflexology
Feeling the different sensations of the earth in barefoot has health benefits. Certain pressure points relate to certain body parts, improving energy, circulation, and organ function. Walking barefoot can give you a fabulous massage!
4. Balance
Feeling the ground beneath our feet can provide a better sense of stability.
5. Improves Mental Health
Being barefoot leads us to be mindful of their environment. You must be aware of the space around you and be more in tune with your body. Simply feeling the sensation of the ground under our feet can have a calming effect.
Unfortunately, there are certain situations where being barefoot is just not possible. Some of these include:
- Dangerous terrain with sharp objects
- Public places that require footwear such as stores and restaurants
- Cold weather when you need some insulation
- Public places where you could encounter a fungal infection such as the gym or public showers
- Hot pavement
Thankfully, you can experience the benefits of being barefoot while protecting your feet with a shoe. Leguano barefoot shoes are specifically designed to give you that feeling. A thin sole allows you to still feel the ground. A flexible upper lets your foot move freely. A zero heel to toe drop helps to keep your foot in a natural position.
So go ahead and enjoy National Barefoot Day no matter where you are!
